WIREGRASS REGION

SOLO II

2006 SCCA Solo 2 Rulebook located HERE

Solo 2 is the SCCA brand name for autocross competition. Solo 2 events are driving skill contests that emphasize the driver's ability and the car's handling characteristics. This is accomplished by driving a course that is designated by traffic cones on a low hazard location, such as a parking lot or inactive airstrip. While speeds are no greater than those normally encountered in legal highway driving, the combination of concentration and car feedback creates an adrenaline pumping experience.

Each car takes turns negotiating the course while being timed. Risk to the cars and drivers are very minimal. The majority of drivers compete in their regular street cars with little to no modifications. People also race from open wheel cars to trucks (non-lifted). Most any car safe for use on the street is suitable for autocross. The cars must pass a safety inspection (battery not loose, seat belts in place, etc.). A quick tech inspection checklist you can use before you head out to the event is located Here.

Membership in the SCCA is not required to participate. A state driver's license is required. Participants under 18 are required to have a special notarized permission slip. Drivers must also wear helmets for their protection. Drivers are asked to take a shift working the course (picking up pylons that are hit) to keep the event going.

Wiregrass Region participates in the Formula Junior Program.  The Formula Junior Program allows drivers at least eight years old to drive go-karts. Contact one of the Wiregrass Officers if you have any questions concerning the Formula Junior classes, eligibility requirements or safety requirements for the Junior Driver Program.

Events are held at Hunt Field Army Airfield, north of Dothan. See the Map page for driving directions.

  New 'RULES' for 2006

(these have always been rules for the events just not written down, but with so many new folks, figured we needed to post them)

- ALL PERSONS ENTERING THE EVENT SITE MUST SIGN THE INSURANCE WAIVER.
This means EVERYONE: Drivers, Crew, Family, Fan Club, whatever. Sign the waiver, get a free armband. Our Insurance Carrier will NOT let us hold the event unless EVERY person at the event signs the Insurance waiver. ("At the event" = entering the Airfield gate). Roving armband inspections will occur throughout the event.

- Unless notified otherwise, all Wiregrass Region Solo 2 events are "non-spectator" events. Insurance and safety requirements are much stricter for "spectator" events, plus they are more expensive to put on (meaning higher entry fees required).

- Wiregrass Region Autocrosses (SOLO II) are all-volunteer run events. The more folks we have helping, the easier it gets and the more runs we can get in! A listing of the worker positions we need for each event has been posted HERE. All drivers must take their turns working to help put on the event. (You can have one of your 'crew' work as surrogate on your behalf).

- At registration, you must show your Driver's License prior to registering/competing. If you are a SCCA member, please state so and show your SCCA membership card prior to registering/competing.

- Do not leave trash at the event site (food wrappers, bottles, shop rags, filters, parts, bolts, etc). We run at a ACTIVE helicopter airfield. Anything left on the ground on Sunday finds it's way into engines of the Army's $19M helicopters on Monday. If this happens, we will lose this site to hold our events. Bring a trash bag with you, pack out your trash, or just use the dumpster located near the building.

- If you use a loaner helmet, turn it in as soon as you complete your run. We only have a couple and if you hang on to it while you get back in line, then someone else needing one will not be able to take their run. We will try to start having a 'helmet checker' at the grid to collect them once you finish your run.

- If you need to leave early, before completing all your runs, please let someone at Timing know this so we don't expend time waiting or looking for you to come up to grid. Same goes for if you're having mechanical problems and are working on them, but about to miss your run group.

- Absolutely NO hot-rodding in the paddock area, any of the access roads at the site, or any of the other runways at the site. No tire-warming/burnouts. No speed over what is posted (by the Army for that installation). Violators will be asked to leave immediately. Also ask that you refrain from hot-rodding (speeding, burnouts, etc.) on the road leading to/from the event site. All it takes is a couple complaints from the folks who live on that road to have our events cancelled or the local police on our case.

- All 'accidents', of any nature, while at the event site MUST be reported to the Event Safety Steward. Accidents include personal injuries or vehicle damage.

- ALL minors (those under age 18) must complete a minor waiver upon entering the event site. More info on this is located HERE, you can download a copy of the minor waiver HERE.
